  2. including of the ground  for that figure and the 
  3. study of the interplay between the figure  and its 
  4. ground . Graeco-Roman, or visual man, has 
  5. consistently studied the figure  minus the ground . 
  6. When Q.D. Leavis did a study of Fiction and the  
  7. Reading Public , there was an uproar because she 
  8. had ventured to suggest that highly literate 
  9. people could lead moronic lives through most of 
  10. their waking hours. It is the only study ever made, 
  11. in English, of a reading public. That is, the study 
  12. of ground  for the figure  of the novel. The ordinary
